Within recent years, its psychometric adequacy has been challenged because the originally proposed subscales are not independent and appear to display social desirability effects. The purpose of this study was to investigate the BSRI with respect to its factor structure and the desirability of subscale adjectives. In order to investigate the instrument’s adequacy, two separate phases of inquiry were conducted. Phase I explored the BSRI's structure for both self-ratings and desirability ratings for a Male, a Female, and an Adult target. Results from these analyses yielded a three factor solution incorporating the dimensions of Interpersonal Sensitivity, Instrumental/Leader, and Immaturity. Based on substantive and statistical criteria, this data was used to modify the instrument to a 38 item questionnaire free of the more undesirable subscale adjectives. The modified instrument was administered to a second sample to test the stability of its factor structures for interpretable two and three factor solutions. While the two factor solution was quite clear, further modification of the BSRI was not conducted. The Instrumental/Leader subscale split into two dimensions indicating that some degree of desirability bias was still present in the instrument. Further analysis of this subscale is needed to ascertain its role in the overall BSRI factor structure. Data was also gathered on two measures of socially desirable response tendency. These scales correlated significantly with both BSRI subscales and indicated that some desirability response set was present. Analyses of variance on these measures indicated both gender and identity effects.Data was also gathered on a set of criterion variables: which assessed self-esteem, self-disclosure, and communication competence. Multiple discriminant analyses using identity classifications from the modified BSRI yielded results consistent with past research on sexual identity and these constructs. 1980 English text Bowling Green State University / OhioLINK http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=bgsu1570783750513639 http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=bgsu1570783750513639 unrestricted This thesis or dissertation is protected by copyright: all rights reserved.
