The first experiment demonstrated that DVs were maximal on the first day following hatching and that later days had lower but approximately equal rates (days 2,3,4, and 7), Central injections of 200 picomoles of morphine or beta-endorphin suppressed the response on any day. Beta-endorphin was always more potent than morphine. In a dose-response study comparing beta-endorphin, alpha-endorphin, gamma-endorphin, met-enkephalin, morphine and water, beta-endorphin was clearly more effective than the others in reducing DVs. Alpha-endorphin, gamma-endorphin, and morphine were equipotent while met-enkephalin was clearly inferior in reducing DVs. Peripheral injections of naloxone (lOmg/kg), an opiate antagonist, decreased the ability of beta-endorphin or morphine central injections to suppress the DVs indicating that the drug effects were at least in part through the brain's opiate receptors. Additionally, of 10 other endogenous peptides only 4 had opiate-like effects indicating that the opiate effects were not simply general effects of peptides. A brain mapping study suggested that the sites of morphine suppression of DVs were near the midline in or near the hypothalamus. These areas of the brain are known to contain vocalization circuitry and endorphins. 1979 English text Bowling Green State University / OhioLINK http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=bgsu1566463066612353 http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=bgsu1566463066612353 unrestricted This thesis or dissertation is protected by copyright: all rights reserved.
