Educational Leadership The purpose of this study was to develop a descriptive model of programs used for the preparation of educational supervisors in Brazil. This was phase II of a binational study, Project SSESP (Status Study of Educational Supervisor Preparation Programs) for the preparation of supervisors in Brazil and the United States sponsored by the Fulbright Commission and directed by Dr. Leslie J. Chamberlin of Bowling Green State University, Bowling Green, Ohio. Secondary analyses included selected comparisons of the Brazilian model to geographic regions within Brazil. The samples for this study were selected from among a population of 290 universities presently preparing educational supervisors in Brazil and the fifty State Universities in the United States. The data was gathered through a questionnaire produced in English, translated into Portuguese, and used in the respective countries. Through a series of questions, data and information was collected which indicated the following results about Brasil: 1. Most of the supervisory preparation programs are offered only at the undergraduate degree level. 2. The vast majority of professors were female and held under-graduate degrees, 3. Almost all students in supervisory programs attend the university on a part-time basis. 4, The typical courses for the programs were required by law with few elective courses offered. 5. The areas of skills highly emphasized related to the functions, purposes, planning and roles of supervision. The data on the regions of Brazil was similar to the Brazilian model. In comparing the Brazilian model with the United States, the following similarities and differences were noted: In the United States; 1. Supervisors were prepared at the graduate level, 2. Professors were predominantly male and held Ph.D. degrees, 3. Students also attended the university on a part-time basis, 4. Courses were not required by federal legislation, but universities had required courses, 5. The area of skills highly emphasized were the process, purpose and definition of supervision with decision making and evaluation of instructional materials ranking high. 1979 English text Bowling Green State University / OhioLINK http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=bgsu1566463066610071 http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=bgsu1566463066610071 unrestricted This thesis or dissertation is protected by copyright: all rights reserved.
