Theater The study initiated the development of an empirical measure capable of recording a performer's description of an audition. The assessments included the performer's description of: 1) him/herself at an audition; 2) the other performers at an audition; 3) the director at an audition; and, 4) the atmosphere of an audition. The instrument adapted for this study was the Q-sort. Single word adjectives were used as variables.An initial pool of 149 adjectives was reduced to four separate pools composed of fifty adjectives, one for each dimension investigated. The adjectives were sorted by 355 performers depending on if the performers considered them accurate or inaccurate descriptors of the audition. The data for each dimension were submitted to alpha factor analysis (SPSS). The factors obtained were orthogonally rotated. The Self (S) factors were labeled: "Self-assured"; "Frustrated"; "Earnest"; "Self-controlled"; and, "Consonant." The Other Performers (OP) factors were labeled: "Adroit"; "Menacing"; "Consonant"; and, "Strict." The Director (D) factors were labeled: "Considerate"; "Able"; "Dismaying"; "Impelled"; and, "Restrained." The Atmosphere (A) factors were labeled: "Vitalized"; "Irritating"; "Stringent"; and, "Consonant." Factors across the four dimensions were grouped in accordance with perceived similarities in the focus of their assessments. Group A seemed to assess potential ability: "Self-assured" (S); "Adroit" (OP); and, "Able" (D). Group B seemed to assess potential involvement in or commitment to the audition: "Earnest" (S); "Considerate" (D); and, "Vitalized" (A). Group C seemed to assess potential threat: "Frustrated" (S); "Menacing" (OP); "Dismaying" (D); and, "Irritating" (A). Group D seemed to assess potential control or restriction: "Self-controlled" (S); "Strict" (OP); "Restrained" (D); "Impelled" (D); and "Stringent" (A). Group E seemed to assess the dimensions according to a set of standards or past experience. Group E includes the "Consonant" factors of the Self, Other Performers and Atmosphere dimensions.
