Occupational Psychology It is an intuitively appealing notion that vocational interests affect occupational choice. If this is true, then interest patterns should account for occupational affiliation, and individuals in similar occupations should show similar interest patterns. The purpose of this study was to develop an occupational classification system, using vocational interest dimensions as the basis for the taxonomy. The vocational interest dimensions were derived from the Strong Vocational Interest Blank (SVIB), and its newest edition, the Strong-Campbell Interest Inventory (SCII). Twenty individuals from each of 128 occupational groups were included in the sample, which was provided from the normative archives for the SVIB by the Center for Interest Measurement Research, University of Minnesota. The BCTRY cluster analysis method was used to identify four vocational interest dimensions: I. Scientific/Mechanical, II. Business, III. Art/Language, and IV. People leading/Public speaking.Hierarchical and non-hierarchical object-type cluster analyses, based upon a Euclidean distance criterion, were used to identify six core profiles, or 0-types: I. Scientific-Artistic, II. Scientific-Mechanical, III. Artistic, IV. Art/language - People related, V. Business - People related, and VI. Acquiescence type. The occupational group clustering within each of the six types was examined. The occupational clusterings generally coincided with the intuitive clustering implied by the core profile of each type. In some cases, however, the empirical clustering did not match the intuitive or theoretical clustering which might be expected. It was concluded that vocational interests cannot account for all of the variance in occupational choice. External variables not related to interests may have a profound effect on an individual's occupational choice. The most important implication of this research, however, is that there simply may not be a universal vocational interest pattern which is endemic to any given occupation. Overall, however, this study showed that there is some systematic relationship between vocational interests and occupational affiliation. 1978 English text Bowling Green State University / OhioLINK http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=bgsu1566463066605443 http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=bgsu1566463066605443 unrestricted This thesis or dissertation is protected by copyright: all rights reserved.
