Factors considered were: renal function and structure of the gerbil as a desert animal, radiation resistance at a dose of GIS level, effects of GIS level dose on water and electrolyte balance and renal function, and radiation sensitivity of renal tissues. Major emphasis was given to the morphological changes in the renal glomerulus which were described qualitatively as well as quantitatively in terms of changes in volumetric density of the glomerular components between irradiated and non-irradiated animals. Hale gerbils, 4, 12, and 24 weeks of age were given a single dose of 2,500 R (low GIS level) whole-body radiation from a Cs137 source at the dose rate of 85 R per min. Weight changes following irradiation showed a gradual decrease at first, and a sharp decrease starting on the sixth day, while non-irradiated animals showed a general weight gain. The weight losses were more severe in younger animals. Scanning and transmission electron microscopy of renal glomeruli revealed swelling and irregularity of the epithelial foot processes, a collapse of the capillary lumen, thickening of the basement membrane with irregular structures, and a homogenization of the mesangial matrix. Quantitative analyses (morphometrics) of the renal glomeruli of the three age groups showed significant increase in diameters, and hence calculated volumes over the age period studied. Cellular components of the glomeruli increased throughout this period while the basement membrane and the capillary lumen remained unchanged. The irradiation did not cause changes in the glomerular diameter, but a significant increase in the total volume of epithelial cells at the expense of other components occurred. Although the gerbils are somewhat radiation resistant, this study indicated that irradiation did affect the gerbil generally and its renal glomeruli specifically. 1978 English text Bowling Green State University / OhioLINK http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=bgsu1566463066601265 http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=bgsu1566463066601265 unrestricted This thesis or dissertation is protected by copyright: all rights reserved.
