Funding data were provided by the National Science Foundation and institutional data were provided by the National Center for Educational Statistics; other data were collected with a questionnaire that was mailed to the sample institutions. The data were analyzed to determine the correlations between institutional characteristics and total federal funding. The characteristics were also correlated with the ratio of R & D funds to the number of full-time faculty to remove the influence of institutional size and focus on research-related activities. Correlations with probability levels of .001 were selected for analysis. Characteristics with correlation coefficients which exceeded .84 were: 1976 federal funding, number of proposals submitted to federal agencies, 1971 federal R & D funding, 1976 HEW funding, number of full-time graduate students, total institutional budget, 1976 NSF funding, number of FTE faculty, number of proposals submitted to external agencies, 1976 state funding, number of graduate assistantships, number of graduate faculty, and number of full-time faculty. Among the characteristics which exhibited no significant correlation with federal funding and the R & D/faculty ratio were: student/faculty ratios, ACT and SAT scores, percentage of students receiving financial aid, percentage of non-caucasian students, lobbying efforts, and full-time credit hour enrollment requirements. Between 1971 and 1976, the lower ranked institutions achieved proportionately greater gains in total federal funding than the higher ranked schools; those ranked in the combined second and third quartiles made greater gains in R & D funding than schools in the first and fourth quartiles. However, there were few significant changes in the rankings during that period and it appears that few schools will greatly increase their positions in the rankings in the near future, although many can realistically hope to significantly increase their federal funding levels. 1978 English text Bowling Green State University / OhioLINK http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=bgsu15664630665997 http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=bgsu15664630665997 unrestricted This thesis or dissertation is protected by copyright: all rights reserved.
