Adult Education Non-traditional-aged students are going back to higher education institutions to pursue college degrees. Credit for life experience is considered one of the alternatives to meet the needs of these adults who have a variety of life experiences which might be worth college credit. The purposes of this study were to determine the attitudes and degree of interest toward credit for life experience from a selected group of non-traditional-aged students at the main campus of Bowling Green State University, Ohio and to summarize writings about credit for life experience. The population under study consisted of 124 non-traditional-aged students who had previously agreed to be personally interviewed. Of these students, seventy-five were personally interviewed. A follow-up was conducted and the instrument was mailed to the remaining 49 students who could not be personally interviewed. Twenty-eight students returned the questionnaire partially answered. The majority of the students had already heard of credit for life experience and their sources of information were newspapers, magazines, classmates and professors. The most commonly mentioned typeS of life experiences the students thought might qualify for college credit were work experiences. Half of the students mentioned that they had read course descriptions in the BGSU catalog, the contents of which might be equivalent to their experiences, The most commonly mentioned sources of information the students had to document their experiences were recommendations by associates and superiors. Oral exams and a demonstration and performance were the most commonly mentioned testing systems the students were willing to go through to offer proof of their proficiency. The most commonly mentioned criteria that justify the awarding of college credit were the assessment of knowledge, skills, and competencies and levels of mastery. A majority of the students stated that fifty percent or less of the total hours toward graduation should be the maximum the university should give students for their life experiences. 1978 English text Bowling Green State University / OhioLINK http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=bgsu1566463048519272 http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=bgsu1566463048519272 unrestricted This thesis or dissertation is protected by copyright: all rights reserved.
