Psychology Research has shown that incarceration can be a drastic change for an individual, especially the relatively young "unsophisticated" offender. This study attempted the development of an assessment instrument which could predict an inmate's effectiveness in handling problems at the Milan Federal Correctional Institution. Within the framework of the behavior-analytic model, inmates were surveyed for specific situations which they found problematic, another group of inmates were asked to list possible responses to those situations, and a final group of "effective" inmates provided evaluative ratings of individual responses to each situation. A 38-item multiple-choice test was then administered to 120 incoming inmates, and the effectiveness scores of their responses were cluster analyzed. Two major clusters of situations emerged: (1) problems involving staff, and (2) problems involving other inmates. Three-month follow-up failed to demonstrate any consistent significant correlations between test effectiveness scores and the criteria used (e.g., case manager ratings of an inmate's effectiveness in dealing with other inmates). The test situations themselves, however, may prove to be useful in groups aimed at developing coping skills. For example, approaches to handling a particular problem could be role played in Admission/Orientation groups, and feedback on various responses discussed. 1977 English text Bowling Green State University / OhioLINK http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=bgsu1566463048515759 http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=bgsu1566463048515759 unrestricted This thesis or dissertation is protected by copyright: all rights reserved.
