Sociology Two objectives were developed for this study. The first was to create a methodological procedure for measuring occupational choice which would permit the utilization of a refined classification scheme and a relatively small sample size. This objective was met through the development of total and restricted occupational consistency measures. The second objective was to develop and test a theoretical model of occupational selection which utilized the above method and permitted an interdisciplinary approach to occupational choice. The model was based on data from 986 male and female graduate students at Bowling Green (Ohio) and Ball State (Indiana) Universities. Students were given a battery of tests and questionnaires which were administered as part of the Professional Development Project at Bowling Green State University. The theoretical model was only weakly supported. In particular, the expectation that psychological variables would suppress the effect of compatibility of father's occupation with the offspring's primary occupational goal was not supported. However, the expectation of differences in occupational consistency scores by sex and social class were strongly supported. These findings suggest that the above method for measuring occupational choice may be quite useful. The theoretical model, however, needs further revision. 1977 English text Bowling Green State University / OhioLINK http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=bgsu1566463048512075 http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=bgsu1566463048512075 unrestricted This thesis or dissertation is protected by copyright: all rights reserved.
