Psychology The effects of course work and field experiences with the elderly on attitudes of college students toward that population were assessed. Students in four groups received either course work alone, course work in combination with visits to healthy and active senior citizens, course work in combination with visits to residents of a nursing home, or no relevant course work or field experience. All subjects completed a battery of seven questionnaires at the beginning and end of the ten week university quarter. A multivariate analysis of variance was conducted on pre-test measures and on change scores from pre-test to post-test. No significant multi variate difference was found among the groups on initial measures. A significant multivariate difference was revealed on change scores, however. Within-group multivariate analyses of variance revealed significant overall changes from pre-test to post-test only for the senior citizen visitors and the control group. On a measure of interest in working with the elderly, there was a significant difference in change scores among the groups, with the senior citizen visitors revealing the only positive change. A measure involving negative "stereotypes" about the elderly yielded a significant difference in change scores among the groups, with the control group revealing the only significant decrease in acceptance of the "stereotypes". On a measure of perceived potency of the elderly, differences in change scores among the groups approached traditional significance levels, with the control group revealing the only significant positive change from pre-test to post-test. Two results were of major interest. First, the visitation experience with active senior citizens produced significantly more favorable responding, while the nursing home experience appeared to have no significant impact upon students' overall pattern of responding. This suggested that the nature of the visitation experience was crucial and that conflicting results in the literature may have resulted,in part, from a failure to consider the heterogeneity among the elderly being visited. Second, results varied across measures, suggesting that inconsistencies in the literature may also have resulted from the practice of assessing attitudes with single measures. 1977 English text Bowling Green State University / OhioLINK http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=bgsu1566463048507906 http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=bgsu1566463048507906 unrestricted This thesis or dissertation is protected by copyright: all rights reserved.
