Psychology Typal or taxonomic methodology has proved useful to both the biological and social sciences in providing structure to complex sets of data. The current study applied typal analysis to examine the underlying dimensions on which management positions and managers' stylistic approaches to work differ. In addition, typologies were developed that yielded groupings of management jobs and manager styles. Two job description inventories developed in earlier studies, and a manager style inventory constructed in the current project were used to collect job and style descriptions on 295 managers from different organizations, management levels, and functional areas. The Tryon and Bailey (1970) BC TRY system of factor and cluster analysis was used to extract basic job content and stylistic dimensions from the three inventories. Both hierarchical and nonhierarchical clustering techniques were used to develop typologies of manage-positions and manager styles. While it was possible to develop homogeneous groups of jobs and styles, results indicated that the specific assignment of management jobs was essentially dependent upon the method of job description used. In addition, groupings based on managers' reported stylistic approach were relatively independent of the manager's reported job content. No relationship was observed between stylistic approach and job success as measured by salary growth. Results of the study indicated that management positions could be meaningfully grouped on the basis of job content. It was suggested that such information might be used to develop homogeneous job groupings for purposes of validation research. Training methods and job rotation were also targeted as areas where information provided by a job's typal membership might be useful. It was suggested that future research expand on the systems of job and style typologies to develop a model for examining the generality of research findings. 1976 English text Bowling Green State University / OhioLINK http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=bgsu1566463048504755 http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=bgsu1566463048504755 unrestricted This thesis or dissertation is protected by copyright: all rights reserved.
