Theater The nature of the director/actor relationship is an area of growing concern for theatre practitioners. The present investigation was prompted by an interest in the director's style or system of communication and its effects on the rehearsal process. This study attempted to investigate the effects of two contrasting systems of communication, Open, participatory and Closed, non-participatory, in two areas: 1) actor inventiveness, and 2) the rehearsal atmosphere. Each of two directors manipulated both the Open and the Closed systems of communication, resulting in the formation of four experimental casts. A variety of dependent measures was used to measure the effects of the system of communication and/or the individual director. They are as follows: a pre-post creativity test; actor satisfaction indices; a rehearsal atmosphere test; problem-solving tests; nonverbal improvisations; post-production interviews and daily journals; and a system of interaction analysis developed for use in the theatre. The results of the study indicated that: 1) actors are sensitive to the director's attitudes and system of communication; 2) actors enter the rehearsal situation with expectations about their role and the director's role in the rehearsal process; 3) though actors will comply with situational demands, concealed frustration may result in hostile or childish behavior; 4) even when directors are cognizant of the particular rehearsal situation in which they find themselves, their perception of actor satisfaction and actor expectations may be inaccurate; S) the extreme form of a system of communication can be frustrating to both actors and director; 6) there were greater differences among the groups with regard to actor inventiveness and the rehearsal atmosphere as a result of the individual director than as a result of the system of communication. Future research in the area of director/actor interaction, particularly with regard to the nature of the actor's influence on the director and the effects of various kinds of scripts on the rehearsal process, is needed to further expli-cate the results of the present study. 1975 English text Bowling Green State University / OhioLINK http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=bgsu1566297715172041 http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=bgsu1566297715172041 unrestricted This thesis or dissertation is protected by copyright: all rights reserved.
