American Literature This annotated edition of Nathaniel Hawthorne's official Consular dispatches was designed to fill a gap in Hawthorne scholarship concerning the period from August of 1853 to the autumn of 1857 when Hawthorne was United States Consul at Liverpool, England. Previous studies of this episode in Hawthorne's career have been dependent on his private letters, his journals, and his remarks about his Consular experiences in Our Old Home; none have examined the official correspondence; and there has, hitherto, been no edition of this portion of Hawthorne's writing. The study begins with an extensive introduction which sketches the events leading to Hawthorne's appointment and summarizes the duties which he undertook as Consul. The Introduction also emphasizes two conclusions which result from the study: that Hawthorne, in contrast to his popular image as a reclusive, romantic allegorist, was an efficient and able administrator capable of dealing successfully with constant and complex practical affairs; and that Hawthorne's close and constant contact with the brutality of mid-nineteenth century merchant marine life may have contributed to his loss of the artistic distance and objectivity which had enabled him to write his most successful romances. A Note on the Text explains the editorial principles used in the preparation of the text and provides an illustration of the format. The dispatches are then presented, with identifying tags and with headnotes that provide background information, cross-references to other dispatches, and commentary on Hawthorne's changing attitudes, emphases, and concerns as reflected in the letters. Footnotes identify names and places referred to in the text of the dispatches and also record notations made on the dispatches in Washington.
