Psychology The behavior of one-year-old infants was assessed in an unfamiliar i.e., strange environment, which involved separation from the mother and exposure to an adult stranger. Infants were categorized as Group A (Gp.A) if they showed little desire for proximity to the mother, and as Group B (Gp.B) if they actively sought proximity. Ainsworth et. al., (1971) inferred that Gp.B infants have had a harmonious attachment relationship with the mother whereas Gp.A infants have not. The validity of this inference was evaluated by comparing Gp.A and Gp.B on maternal, infant and interaction system variables. Data were based on 46 mother-infant pairs. Infants were assigned to groups by objective discriminant functions. Mothers of Gp.B infants scored higher than mothers of Gp.A infants on the Maternal Attitude Scale Reciprocity Factor (t=1.83,_p<.05). In an unstructured Free Play Situation (FPS) Gp.B mothers were rated higher than Gp.A mothers on Maternal Reciprocity-Sensitivity (t=1.83, p<.05). In a structured Directed Play Situation (DPS), in which interaction was encouraged, no maternal differences were found. In the FPS Gp.A infants explored more than Gp.B infants (t=l.96, _p<.05), and Gp.B infants showed more non-distress vocalization than Gp.A infants (t=2.40, _p<025). In the FPS the frequency of simultaneous reciprocal interaction was greater for Gp.B mother-infant dyads compared to Gp.A dyads (t=1.89, p<.05). No sex differences were found. It was concluded that Gp.B dyads showed a greater propensity for reciprocal social interaction compared to Gp.A dyads. To the extent that a harmonious attachment relationship is characterized by an orientation towards reciprocal interaction, the inference that Gp.B dyads have a more harmonious attachment relationship was supported. 1975 English text Bowling Green State University / OhioLINK http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=bgsu1566297702069854 http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=bgsu1566297702069854 unrestricted This thesis or dissertation is protected by copyright: all rights reserved.
