Education The purpose of this study was to discover: (1) the relationship between the differences in level of "Ressentiment" among high school students and schools; and (2) the relationship between the existence of "Ressentiment" and student perception of Internal-External control and pupil control ideology of certified staff. Schools were divided into five average daily membership (ADM) ranges as of October 10, 1972, in grades 10, 11, and 12. The instruments used in the study were: (1) Friedenberg-Nordstrom "Ressentiment" Characteristics Index, (2) Custodialism-Humanism Scale (Form CI) developed by Terry Eidell, and (3) the Modified Rotter Internal-External Scale. Supplemental data to assist in describing the schools and from the 1970 U.S. Census data for Ohio was provided. Usable responses were received from 975 students and 323 teachers. Findings: (1) Statistically significant rated "Ressentiment" was found in all schools, (2) The basic assumption that higher levels of "Ressentiment" will be found where higher levels of teacher custodialism is present, was supported at the .01 level of confidence for hypothesis one, (3) The hypothesis that the level of "Ressentiment" is related to the level of students perception of internal control over their destiny in school was also supported at the .01 level of confidence, and (4) There appears to be no statistical relationship between schools in the form of interaction between level of "Ressentiment", student feelings of internality, and teacher control ideology. "Ressentiment" or student feelings of hostility toward the schools, was found in all schools. Its existence appeared to be related to socio-economic conditions. The relationship between the existence of "Ressentiment" student feelings of internality and teacher control ideology can be defined statistically. School-community related data were and can be used to assist in interpretation of findings. Suggestions were made for additional research. 1974 English text Bowling Green State University / OhioLINK http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=bgsu1566297702060914 http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=bgsu1566297702060914 unrestricted This thesis or dissertation is protected by copyright: all rights reserved.
