Structurally, the large-scale form of the composition is inspired by the Kübler-Ross model. More commonly known as the five stages of grief, the Kübler-Ross model is intended to serve as a heuristic device outlining a progression of emotional experiences that occur when one is faced with impending death (e.g., with terminally ill patients). As the experience of dying is unique to each individual, these five stages—denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance—typically occur in a non-linear fashion, with the possibility of some stages being omitted altogether. In this sense, the overall trajectory of Diatomaceous Earth is intended to parallel the Kübler-Ross model as the musical character of each section is influenced by the emotional content from one of the five stages. The harmony for the composition is derived from two Z-related hexachords, 6-13 [013467] and 6-42 [012369]. Limited aleatory is an integral component to both the character and musical growth of the composition.
