The poems cover themes like rape, sexual coercion, compulsory motherhood, and violence against women and girls. Set mostly in the rural American South, the poems examine what it’s like to come of age as a young girl growing up in poverty around Opioid and alcohol abuse, and how that abuse destroys families. The poems exist between a real world and an otherworld where women and girls walk the land. They search for each other sending messages through static and from the bottoms of the river. This manuscript examines the nature of agency in a world where women’s bodies and minds are still objectified and devalued. Magnolia Canopy Otherworld is split into three sections, each expanding on the last with many of the themes and images repeating and linking together, and the section breaks in this manuscript exist as pauses. Though the work is not strictly confessional, many of the speakers and settings in these poems are inspired by my life, and the lives of the women and girls I grew up around, and stories I read about in the news. 2019-05-20 English text Bowling Green State University / OhioLINK http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=bgsu1555331993434814 http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=bgsu1555331993434814 restricted--full text not available online This thesis or dissertation is protected by copyright: all rights reserved.
