The term petrichor refers to the pleasant, earthy smell that accompanies rain after a period of warm, dry weather. This piece is the next in a series of pieces that deal with ritual as a concept. As such, Petrichor offers a ritualistic means of welcoming the rains. The piece's percussion instrumentation includes vibraphone, one pair of bongos, one floor tom, two temple blocks (high and low), four clay pots (high, medium, low, and very low), and two glass bottles (high and low.) This instrumentation allows for the continued exploration of effective ways to combine traditional and found percussion instruments and traditional and non-traditional timbres.Petrichor's form is through-composed, while also considering all possible instrumental combinations. Each instrument has a solo feature, instruments are paired in duos, and one section brings the entire ensemble to the foreground. These combinations unfold over time in the following order: percussion and flute duet, flute solo, flute and harp duet, harp solo, harp and percussion duet, percussion solo, and finally the trio. Solo sections also include sporadic interjections by the other two instruments. The composition's harmonic and melodic content derives from the pitch collection 8- 29[01235679], which was chosen because of the numerous enharmonic spellings it can facilitate making it idiomatic for harp tuning. Rhythms are cast in both metered and unmetered gestures and incorporate the repetitive nature of ritual. Timbral variety has been added into the piece through the aforementioned found percussion and also through the use of extended techniques. In the flute, extended techniques include embouchure glissandi and timbre trills, and in the harp include scraping vertically along the wire strings with fingernails and finger cymbals. 2019-05-17 English text Bowling Green State University / OhioLINK http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=bgsu1554480177735004 http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=bgsu1554480177735004 unrestricted This thesis or dissertation is protected by copyright: all rights reserved.
