Educational Leadership This study centered around the position of the public secondary school vice-principal. Position holders from two geographical locations, the State of Ohio and the Province of Saskatchewan, were studied for the purpose of obtaining their perceptions of the role of the vice-principalship. Previous educational researchers such as Halpin, Gross, Beynon, and Dillehay have concluded that it is possible to study administrative behavior in terms of the role expectations that the administrators have for their administrative positions. Getzels, Lipham, and Campbell summarize the definitions of role expectation as those rights and duties, privileges, and obligations that outlines what a person should and should not do as the position holder of a particular role in a social system. The design of the study, matched samples, made it possible to determine the role expectations of individual vice-principals for the vice-principalship. This was achieved by the use of an eighty item instrument that measured expectations within the following six dimensions: administrative leadership, community responsibility, administrative planning, staff relations, consideration, and discipline. Each vice-principal of the public secondary schools in -the State of Ohio and Province of Saskatchewan that had an enrollment of 400 or more was requested by mail to complete the instrument that was compiled of the following: (1) the Vice-Principal's Behavior Scale (comprised of the previously mentioned six dimensions) and (2) basic information. On the basis of their responses to the basic information requested on the instrument, Saskatchewan respondents were matched to Ohio respondents according to the following variables: school enrollment, length of experience as a vice-principal, age, and academic preparation. After matching of the respondents on the above-mentioned variables, the significance of differences among responses of individuals from Ohio and Saskatchewan in regard to the role expectations of the vice-principal were analyzed by means of the statistical technique of Chi Square. Differences were regarded as significant at the .05 level of confidence. The analysis of the data gathered indicated that Ohio and Saskatchewan vice-principals agreed in their responses to seventy-seven of the eighty role expectations. Thus, it was found that the vice-principals from Saskatchewan and Ohio view their role similarly. This study also revealed that position holders with bachelors degrees perceived their role in the same manner as did those who had obtained their masters degree, The question of race and religion was also raised in this study and is an area where additional research could be conducted. 1970 English text Bowling Green State University / OhioLINK http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=bgsu1554464085295955 http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=bgsu1554464085295955 unrestricted This thesis or dissertation is protected by copyright: all rights reserved.
