It explores the combination of subconscious panic and conscious tranquility felt during near-death experiences, using neoromantic and sound mass styles to illustrate this duality. Inspired by various books, documentaries, and first-person accounts, Hypoxia juxtaposes agitated rhythms and harsh extended techniques with simple, ethereal melodies and chorales. These juxtapositions emulate the rapidly changing and highly unstable mental state of the sufferer.Hypoxia is organized in five large sections, indicated through loud, tutti staccato chords. These structural points represent synapses that drastically affect the way the brain and body reacts to trauma. The piece begins with initial shock, followed by deliriousness, panic, euphoria, and calm. While each of these sections is assigned a major motive, each motive is repeated in multiple sections of the piece, highlighting the complex yet disorderly behavior of the mind throughout a more concrete narrative of the experiencer suffering trauma, living through the experience, and regaining consciousness. 2017-04-10 English text Bowling Green State University / OhioLINK http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=bgsu1490629987974442 http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=bgsu1490629987974442 unrestricted This thesis or dissertation is protected by copyright: all rights reserved.
