Comparison of laboratory based syndromes and field based measurements Rapin, Kathryn Animal Sciences behavior behavioral syndromes crayfish personality The presence of behavioral syndromes and their connection to fitness consequences of organisms has received considerable debate within the literature. The term behavioural syndrome, while still evolving, is used to describe some aspect of consistent correlation of behaviors over multiple contexts either within or between individuals. Yet, what appears to be missing from this work is a connection of syndromes found in laboratory behaviors with similar syndromes found in complex natural environments. For this study, individual crayfish collected from the same local population completed five different behavioural assays in a laboratory setting. These same individuals were subsequently placed into the field and observed for 24 hours. Structural equation modeling was performed in order to elucidate any behavioral syndromes from the laboratory assays that correlated with any syndromes present from the fieldwork. Three laboratory-based syndromes were connected to three separate field assays. Yet, some laboratory assays were uncorrelated with a field results and vice versa. Results from this study provide evidence that although syndromes may exist within laboratory settings, these syndromes may not translate directly into predicting behaviour under natural settings. 2016-05-25 English text Bowling Green State University / OhioLINK http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=bgsu1459776389 http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=bgsu1459776389 unrestricted This thesis or dissertation is protected by copyright: all rights reserved.
