Modern wastewater treatment processes yield two end products: treated water and sewage sludge. The amount of sewage sludge (also known as biosolids) used in agricultural application has increased sharply since ocean dumping of sludge was banned in 1992. Sludge contains trace elements, including heavy metals. The goals of this study were to determine if heavy metals concentrations are significantly different between land applied with sewage sludge and land not applied with sewage sludge, as well as whether these heavy metals concentrations change with depth. An increase with depth may indicate that the heavy metals have migrated through the soil profile over time due to percolation of meteoric water and that they may pose a threat to groundwater resources. 112 soil samples were collected and analyzed from a field located in Bowling Green, Wood County, Ohio. Portions of this field had received sludge applications for several years. The field was divided into non-sludge-applied and sludge-applied areas. Samples were collected from the non-sludge-applied area and the sludge-applied area, as well as at 10 cm depth intervals from 0-40 cm. The samples were digested and analyzed by a commercial laboratory following USEPA methods for ICP-AES analysis. The samples were analyzed for 12 heavy metals (including the metalloids arsenic and antimony, and the non-metal selenium). Statistical analysis indicated that the sludge-applied area of the field had higher concentrations of cadmium, lead, and thallium. Thallium concentrations increased by 85% over the non-sludge-applied area, while cadmium increased by 154%. Statistical analysis also indicated that arsenic, chromium, and nickel increased significantly with depth, while copper, lead, and zinc decreased significantly with depth. Comparison of study data with data from previous background metals studies indicated that site-specific background studies are necessary to make accurate estimates of sludge impact in regard to heavy metal concentrations. Many samples failed to pass one or more regulatory limits when compared with state and federal screening levels. 2006-06-26 English text Bowling Green State University / OhioLINK http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=bgsu1151014530 http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=bgsu1151014530 unrestricted This thesis or dissertation is protected by copyright: all rights reserved.
