The study examined the extent to which participating in a bridge program can impact students’ sense of belonging as well as, if there is an impact, what aspects of the bridge program—academic, social, and co-curricular involvement—contribute to the impact. The four participants discussed their experience in the bridge program and explored their sense of belonging deriving from their sense and feeling of being included, valued, and connected to the college community (Hurtado & Carter, 1997; Pittman & Richmond, 2008; Tovar et al., 2009; Vaccaro & Newman, 2016). Results of the study indicated that bridge program participation did have some impact on students’ sense of belonging as evidenced by participants’ reflections. A cross case analysis of the cases identified three common themes of impact the bridge program experience had on students’ sense of belonging: campus access, community living, and social connection. Thus, participants identified the social and co-curricular environments as the aspects of the bridge program that had the most impact. Findings suggested that further research should explore the construct of sense of belonging within bridge program participation through a longitudinal study to see the impact of participating in the bridge program over time. Furthermore, researchers could design a comparative analysis study to explore the construct of sense of belonging as experienced by bridge program participants as compared to native, fully admitted students. Based on participant reflections, practitioners should work to understand and effectively combat bridge students’ feeling of being “other than” as well as make strong programmatic efforts throughout the bridge year to get students involved based on their varied needs and interests. This effort should focus on opportunities that immerse students in the receiving institution campus community to support and encourage them to create and develop social networks for their long-term success as well as success during the bridge year. 2018 English text University of Akron / OhioLINK http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=akron1541766992869182 http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=akron1541766992869182 unrestricted This thesis or dissertation is protected by copyright: all rights reserved.
