Aerospace Materials Civil Engineering Mechanical Engineering Mechanics titanium alloy aluminum alloy bolt bearing behavior bolted connections tear-out failure Bolted connections are one of the most common methods by which loadsare transmitted between metal structural elements. Because of this, being able to predict the behavior of such connections is a primary concern in structural design. Though much research exists on the behavior of an individual bolt connecting two structural steel elements, research is limited when it comes to other metallic alloys seeing increased applications in modern structures. Two such metals are aluminum and titanium alloys. In this research paper, the limited research on the influence of edge distance on the strength of a single bolt in aluminum is expanded upon. Additionally, the bearing capacity of a single bolt in Ti-6Al-4V titanium alloy is investigated and unique features of its behavior noted. The effect of material ductility on the ability of both alloys to withstand bolt bearing loads is highlighted, and recommendations for design suggested. 2011-12-21 English text University of Akron / OhioLINK http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=akron1322506214 http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=akron1322506214 unrestricted This thesis or dissertation is protected by copyright: all rights reserved.
