Paleoclimatology Environmental Magnetism Paleolimnology Africa Lake Bosumtwi occupies a 1.07 Ma impact crater in Ghana, West Africa. The hydrologically-closed lake fluctuates due to variations in precipitation and evaporation driven by changes in strength of the North African monsoon. Prior studies on short (10 m long) sediment cores have shown that Lake Bosumtwi sediments contain a detailed record of climatic alterations over the last 26 ky. Funded by the National Science Foundation and the International Continental Drilling Project, a team of scientists obtained long sediment drill cores from the lake in the summer of 2004. The 1 Ma history of the lake was recovered by drilling in the crater’s annular moat to recover 291 m of lacustrine sediment.
