Description
Summary:It appears that institutions concerned with the training of teachers are not entirely capable of preparing the teacher for his task as educator. Therefore, the practising teacher should constantly develop his teaching skills. One of the important tasks of the principal is to see to it that the tuition in schools is effective, otherwise injustice is done to the child. Teaching development is a facet of personnel development. Different methods can be applied to accomplish personnel development and thus to promote personnel development. In order to initiate teaching development the principal should perform a specific task. The principal is the manager of the school and his task includes planning, organising, leading and controlling. Futhermore, he is the one who delegates, who judges people and creates a climate in which effective tuition can thrive. Various techniques such as meetings, class visits and discussions with individual teachers are at the disposal of the principal in order to initiate teaching development. Teaching development can result in the teacher acting with more confidence in the classroom and a fraternal spirit can be promoted - which can lead to better academic achievements by the pupils. Empirical research has confirmed what has been discovered in the study of literature. Teachers want to develop professionally by means of in service training courses, and regard the principal as the one who should lead, exercise control and see to it that the teaching potential of each teacher be developed. As confidante of the staff, he is the person who should sympathetically point out deficiencies in the teaching equipment of teachers and aid them in their efforts to improve their teaching skills. These are specific directives which the principal can follow to initiate teaching development, and certain methods which he can apply. One of the most important tasks of a principal, regardless of his manifold tasks, is to initiate teaching development. This will lead to job satisfaction from which pupils will benefit. It is important for the principal to set up a teaching development programme from which one can proceed towards the development of the teaching staff. === Proefskrif (DEd)--PU vir CHO, 1990
