Description
Summary:Background: Restorative Justice and Victim-Offender Mediation as one of its methods are relatively new and unknown concepts in South Africa. The viability of the principles of Ubuntu are investigated in order to form an acceptable and uniquely South African approach. Objectives: The study is aimed at formulating guidelines for the implementation of Victim- Offender Mediations from a unique South African perspective. Method: The method of the study consisted of an in-depth literature survey to formulate a sound theoretic background. The empirical study was done through the use of three focus groups consisting of victims of crime, offenders and practitioners. Pre-designed discussion schedules were used to manage the group sessions. Results: The study showed that both victims and offenders are willing and interested in Restorative Justice and Victim-Offender Mediation. The principles of Ubuntu are also acceptable and can be used in the implementation of the method. Some basic guidelines were formulated === Thesis (M.A. (MW))--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2006.
