The value of the small-, medium- and micro-enterprises (SMME's) to increase entrepreneurship, to create new work opportunities and to increase economic wealth in the country, has been increasingly realised in last few decades. Despite the importance of SMME's, they're threatened by unique problems due to the smaller nature of the organisation. To better understand the concept of entrepreneurship, it is important to realise exactly what a SMME is, why this sector is so important and what unique problems threaten the existence and the success of SMME's. This dissertation aims to investigate 10 factors that influence the profitability of SMME's in South-Africa. The methodology used, was both qualitative and quantative of nature. Data was gathered and was used as the staring point to this study. With the literary study, background information about SMME's was gathered and factors that will be investigated are identified. Following that, an empirical study was done by using questionnaires. The findings of the study revealed that certain factors are out of the control of the organisation, whilst other factors are not. The organisation can however reduce the risks and by doing so can optimally increase profitability. === Thesis (M.B.A.)--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2009.
