Due to an increase of divorcement the marriage as institute is threatened. There is no more respect left for the dissolving character of the marriage as the holy institute of God, where divorce becomes a reality. The wedding day is the introduction to a new era of life. During this time adjustments need to be made whilst the couple is not prepared for it. They need to start to think and act differently and acknowledge the reality of the partner in the new situation. After the induction service of the marriage adjustments need to be made. They realize the demands of the marriage that was unexpected. This is the reason why marriage preparation is a necessity. Marriage preparation makes it possible for the counsellor to guide the couple with relationship building to have a fulfilling relationship. Deuteronomy 24:1-4 as well as Ephesians 5:21-33 are excellent examples of ways to guide premarital couples to understand the meaning of marriage according to the Bible. Biblical counselling of premarital guidance is carried out by a trained counsellor, a called servant of God, using Scriptural founded pastoral skills in pastoral relationships, he is ready to listen, uses the Word of God as the source of knowledge in the counselling process and strives to bring change by means of prayer. The aim is to lead the premarital couple towards growth in belief in God in order to solve their adjustments through faith. A councelling model, namely the Theos – guided model, can be used by Biblical counsellors in order to counsel the premarital couple. The phases in the model, are; the building of relationships, interpreting data, conference, Godward focus, providing instructions and support. Five central pastoral themes were used as foundation for practical theoretical guidelines in this model, namely; pastoral principle, the pastor as counsellor, spirituality, a counselling model for pastoral practice, the use of the Scripture and prayer. === Thesis (M.A. (Pastoral Studies))--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2012
