Authoritarianism was explained away by this teleological assumption, as it was assumed that authoritarian regimes were merely proceeding along the path to democracy more slowly than other countries. Since 2001, the combination of long-lasting authoritarian regimes and the number of nascent democracies that have reverted back to authoritarianism has challenged this assumption of democratization. This new reality has caused scholars to focus on determining why authoritarian regimes have endured.http://hdl.handle.net/2047/D20211220
