Summary: | We describe application of compact hand-held X-ray crystal-based pyroelectric generator for the imaging and elemental analysis of the different metal and non-metal (including biological) objects. Dependence on irradiation dose and geometry of experiment is investigated. Results are compared with in-vacuum chamber X-ray imaging, using our compact crystal-based pyroelectric/photogalvanic accelerator and commercial dental films. We discuss possibility of development and application of crystal-based and improvement of the traditional compact neutron generators for the subsurface imaging and identification of the hidden materials (like explosive and hazardous chemicals). Technology Transfer References: Potential applications for security agencies include on-site inspection of closed packages, detection of plastic explosives, medical diagnostic and localized treatment, disinfection. We will discuss applications of photogalavanic effect (PGE) for x-ray generation. Originally PGE was discovered in ferroelectrics (A.Glass, V. Fridkin, 1974) and was used for the volume holographic grating recording. PGE produce a dc photocurrent without external field in asymmetric materials and gives rise to the electric fields of up to 100 kV/cm. This photovoltage is strong enough to induce photorefractive effect (used for optical storage) and to cause electrical breakdown. Recently we have used PGE for the electron beam generation and for opto-mechanical actuation. Manifestation of PGE in nanomaterials will be reviewed.
