Summary: | Thesis (S.M.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Sloan School of Management, 2012. === Cataloged from PDF version of thesis. === Includes bibliographical references (p. 61-62). === In the recent years we are seeing a significant shift from the PC & Laptop, so called EDP (Electronic Data Processing) to the mobile devices such as smartphones and tablet PCs. Driven by strong customer demands and the technological advancements on the supply side which enable companies to fulfill them, this is a trend which is expected to continue for the near future, at least, and the future of the conventional devices do not seem so bright. This trend has a significant influence on the overall life of anyone living in this environment, but it is even more obvious to the semiconductor industry which is not only fundamental to all the devices, but also is critically influenced by the major changes in the application trends. The shift to mobile devices will not only have influence on the quantity of semiconductors but due to the different characteristics required by the devices, the overall industry is expected to undergo notable adjustments. The thesis analyzes the current wave of change in the use and development of computing devices and foresees how the mobile devices will influence the conventional ones and eventually change the strategies and competitive structure in the semiconductor industry. === by Il Tack Bae. === S.M.
