Summary: | Thesis (M. Arch.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Architecture, 1994. === Includes bibliographical references (p. 93-94). === The premise of the thesis states that to intensify the collective use of public place there must exist a broad collective understanding of physical constituents that 'build' spatial relationships. These spatial understandings are 'made' through a relationship of physical definitions in a particular landscape and should give indications as to how the built environment should be used. Spatial qualities are determined by their capacity to be physically, mentally, and emotionally accessible through association. To examine this premise, the thesis proposes the design of an outdoor public plaza, the configuration of buildings that defines it, and their relationship to an existing public path. These buildings include a learning center and dorm, a commercial building, and a subway station. === by Darrell E. Aldrich. === M.Arch.
