U.S. over-the-air television broadcasting is scheduled to switch to an all-digital format in June, 2009. Therefore, we are ready for a new system which will improve HDTV. A receiver compatible system can add a small bitrate enhancement stream and enable new receivers to easily deinterlace l080i streams. Old receivers can ignore this stream while decoding the original lo8oi stream. Since the enhancement stream has a low bitrate, we can use this system alongside mobile digital television. The receiver compatible system shifts computing costs from the receivers to the transmitters. Since there are more receivers than transmitters, the net cost is reduced dramatically. The receiver compatible system has access to the original video, allowing for superior video quality compared to traditional deinterlacing systems. === by Andy L. Lin. === M.Eng.
