Thesis: S.M. in Management of Technology, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Sloan School of Management, 2018. Cataloged from PDF version of thesis. Includes bibliographical references (pages 35-36). This thesis aims to demonstrate the economic potential of a multi-sided platform (MSP) for remote operation of drones shared over the internet. The commercial drone market has been rapidly growing, but a close look reveals that costs, operational complexities, and regulatory restrictions are holding back more widespread adoption. The thesis explores ways in which a drone sharing platform can mitigate these challenges with technological solutions like remote operation over the internet and advanced autonomy to simplify drone use and reduce search and transaction costs for drone applications. The thesis also evaluates restrictions on remote operation and proposes a strategy based on an expected loosening of regulations over time to scale the business to a dominant position with competitive advantage. by Dennis Chornenky.
