Summary: | Alternative communication systems such as picture exchange systems and sign language are
commonly used instructional techniques when teaching verbal operants to individuals with
deficient vocal verbal repertoires, but which response topography is most efficient is highly
debated. Selection-based manding responses and topography-based manding responses were
alternately taught to three boys with severe language deficits in order to determine the relative efficiency of acquisition of each system. The results indicated that selection-based communication systems were more readily acquired across all participants.
