Developments in this field aid in the synthesis of value- added compounds by shortening and/or simplifying total syntheses. The focus of my research has been the generation of a diazonium-bearing aryl sulfone and subsequent optimization of a new remote hydroxylation procedure with relatively mild conditions. This remote hydroxylation procedure utilizes 4 W blue LEDs (λmax=455 nm) and [Ru(bpy)3]Cl2 to induce the generation of an aryl radical, succeeded by a selective sp3C- H hydrogen abstraction, and installation of an alcohol group via intermediacy of a carbocation.
