Summary: | The Commission of European Communities has recently adopted a directive concerning the protection of privacy with regard to automatic processing of personal data. The author examines this directive and highlights its fundamental principles as well as the other international documents already in force. This directive may have serious implications for the international flow of data from which could be excluded countries which do not include in their national law the principles set out in the directive. Consequently the author examines the legislations of Canada and Quebec in force as well as the voluntary codes of conduct in order to determine whether they comply with the standards proposed by the directive. |
