Synthesis of benzoquinolines.

The object of this work was the use of 1- and 2-tetralones for the synthesis of benzoquinolines. The hydroxymethylene ketones were first prepared, and the benzoquinolines were obtained from them by the same general procedure as was used by Sen-Gupta (1) in obtaining quinoline from hydroxymethylene c...

The hydroxymethylene ketones were first prepared, and the benzoquinolines were obtained from them by the same general procedure as was used by Sen-Gupta (1) in obtaining quinoline from hydroxymethylene cyclohexanone. Benzo(h)quinoline was obtained as expected from 1-tetralone. There were two possibilities, benzo(f)quinoline or benzo(g)quinoline, for the product or the synthesis starting from 2-tetralone, depending on the position of the hydroxymethylene group in the hydroxymethylene derivative of 2-tetralone. The product in tact obtained was benzo(g)quinoline.McGill UniversityTaurins, A.
