Synthesis of benzoquinolines.
The object of this work was the use of 1- and 2-tetralones for the synthesis of benzoquinolines. The hydroxymethylene ketones were first prepared, and the benzoquinolines were obtained from them by the same general procedure as was used by Sen-Gupta (1) in obtaining quinoline from hydroxymethylene c...

Benzo(h)quinoline was obtained as expected from 1-tetralone. There were two possibilities, benzo(f)quinoline or benzo(g)quinoline, for the product or the synthesis starting from 2-tetralone, depending on the position of the hydroxymethylene group in the hydroxymethylene derivative of 2-tetralone. The product in tact obtained was benzo(g)quinoline.McGill UniversityTaurins, A.
