Description
Summary:Informed by discourse analysis and Pierre Bourdieu's field theory, this dissertation seeks to analyze the official discourse on religion in post-1980 Turkey through the interrelated topics of official religious authority, national identity and heritage, and the religious others. Primarily focusing on the debates at the Turkish Grand National Assembly and the publications and statements emanating from the Directorate of Religious Affairs, this study's primary argument is that in the official discourse Muslimness has remained the dominant component of national belonging in the entirety of the said period, in spite of the diversity of the official discourse. This dissertation seeks to make an original contribution to the existing scholarship mainly at the empirical level, through the utilization of the above-mentioned sources as well as the discussion of certain topics relatively neglected in the literature.
