Summary:In 1947, after years of deficits culminating in debt default by the mid nineteen thirties, the Provincial Government of Alberta was fortuitously granted a new and substantial source of revenue, based on the major oil discoveries of that year. This thesis is a critical analysis of the way in which the Provincial Government handled this new revenue source. In view of the bleak fiscal history preceding World War II, it is not surprising that short-term tax considerations were given a high priority.
