Description
Summary:Lignin forms one of the major components of woody materials. It is difficult to define lignin because its structure is still unknown. However the term lignin may be used to designate a group of high molecular weight and chemically related amorphous compounds, predominantly aromatic and mainly built of phenylpropane units (1). It possesses most of the methoxyl of the woody plant. Lignin is unhydrolysed by acids, easily oxidized, soluble in hot alkali and bisulphite and condenses with phenols and thio-compounds (2). The lignin content of wood varies approximately from 18 to 30 per cent, being lower in hardwoods than in softwoods (2). === === ===
