This study is an enquiry into the manner of living of a group of non-institutionalized old people residing in an urban setting. The present introductory chapter is divided into three sections. Section A is a general orientation to the present study. Section B considers the theoretical background to the current trends of research in the field of old age. In Section C, the scope and method of the present study will be described. In recent years an increasing attention has been directed to the phenomenon of an ageing population and to the implications which this has for the individual and for society. This trend has derived from a combination of factors, some of which will be briefly indicated here.
