Description
Summary:The present research explores the use of art therapy with people suffering from Alzheimer's disease (AD). Based on the person centred approach and the creative process, the study examines the establishment of a therapeutic relationship with AD patients and demonstrates the benefits of such an intervention on identity preservation and well being. This research was conducted during a Master's degree practicum at the memory clinic in a hospital of Montreal, between September 2005 and March 2006. The study includes the cases of Beatrice, Benoît, Samuel and Victor, who participated in an art therapy group during sixteen weeks. The present paper is divided into the following three chapters: an overview of the Alzheimer's disease; a literature review on the person centred approach and art therapy with individuals suffering from dementia; and the presentation of the case study, with particular attention given to each participant's journey. The results suggest positive and promising benefits of the use of art therapy with this population
