Summary: | This thesis examines Barbara Pentland's relationship with feminist and
gender issues as explored in her 1976 song cycle Disasters of the Sun. The first half of
this thesis provides biographical information and some of Pentland's thoughts on
being a woman composer in Canada. It briefly examines the collaboration between
Pentland and the poet Dorothy Livesay and their relationship with the feminist
movement in Canada. The latter half of this study is devoted to a detailed analysis
of the seven songs in the cycle. |
