Unusually for this period, Picchi specifies precise instrumentation in much of the collection, including violin, recorder, cornetto, trombone, bassoon, and organ; trombone, violin, and organ being the predominant instruments. The compositional style generally follows the tradition of Giovanni Gabrieli. This document places the Canzoni da sonar in an historical context, and provides insight into the canzonas themselves.
