Summary:A Q-switched, cavity-dumped Nd:YAG laser was developed for use as a diagnostic tool in plasma physics experiments. This laser uses an unstable resonator configuration to produce higher gain and better collimation than would otherwise be possible. Pulses of light with energies of 18±2 mJ and FWHMs of about 12 ns were produced. It was found that more than 100 mJ of light was being emitted in the form of prelase pulses, due to the Pockels cells used having a poor extinction ratio. Efforts were made to correct this problem, with only partial success.
