Summary:The social protection originates from the ancient times, as people were always surrounded by different kinds of danger. The origin of social protection and its further development was induced by such factors as industrialization, urbanization, the conversion of work into commodity, globalization, and the start of the free workers’ movement. Especially globalization and integration processes influence all the countries and their people in a very significant way. The world gradually becomes united economic expanse because the national models of the social protection develop and gradually become similar. The European institutions, such as The Council of Europe and The Council of the European Union propagate the social cohesion in their member countries. For reaching this aim the international documents are being ratified. These documents give the way for further development of the social protection of the European countries including Lithuania. The main documents of the social protection in the European countries are The Social Charter of Europe, The Strategy of the Social Cohesion, and European Code of Social security. Whereas Lithuania adjusts its system of social protection to that of other European countries, it becomes closer to the system of social protection of the higher level.
