A an?lise estat?stica incluiu testes T-pareado, Wilcoxon, Anova e Kruskal-Wallis. === Disserta??o (Mestrado) ? The removal of dental plaque in individuals with cerebral palsy is difficult and can be ineffective. Objective ? The aim of the present study was to determine the effectiveness of brushing with an electric toothbrush switched on and switched off in comparison to manual brushing for the removal of dental plaque in children aged four to 16 years with cerebral palsy. Methods ? A cross-over, randomized, double-blind, clinical trial was conducted. The examiner and statistician were blinded to the brushing method (G1 ? manual brushing; G2 ? brushing with electric toothbrush switched on; and G3 = brushing with electric toothbrush switched on). The order of application was determined randomly by lots. The participants (n = 40) were examined before and after brushing performed by caregivers using the Turesky-Quigley-Hein plaque index. Statistical analysis involved the paired t-test, Wilcoxon test, Kruskal-Wallis test and ANOVA. Results ? Plaque buildup was significantly reduced with the three brushing methods (p < 0.001), with mean reductions of 47.6% in G1, 47.4% in G2 and 44.5% in G3. Significant differences were found between G1 and G3 (p < 0.001) and well as between G2 and G3 (p = 0.007), whereas no statistically significant difference was found between G1 and G2 (p = 0.06). Conclusion ? All brushing methods led to a reduction in dental plaque. The effectiveness was similar between manual brushing and brushing with the electric toothbrush switched on, whereas both these methods achieved statistically better results in comparison to brushing with the electric toothbrush switched off.
